EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
